Les Affaires

by Matthew Rose

Description

'Les Affaires' is a stunning limited edition print from Matthew Rose. This large work is packed full of detail, we found it a challenge and a joy to photograph! To get a sense of just some of the beautiful details please scroll through the images above.

Like a mall from hell and high water, Matthew Rose takes on this vast subject with a surreal tour through the commercial center of his mind with Les Affaires. Expertly produced by Mariela Cadiz and Burning Boy Press in Paris, Les Affaires brings consumption and all its myriad expressions to a neat explosion. Here, Freud (lower left corner) considers the expansive narratives from behind a silhouette of Popeye-as-Buddah. A family ponders a side of beef, a salesman dangles a naked blue girl in offering from his battery-as-desk (a housewife's head). A child's arms are weighed on a scale. One of a large pair of hands beholds a fashion plate – her own head morphed into a construction of pipes topped by a fan – while the other hand readies a pen for signing over something of value.

Indeed value is explored and remade as acts of gloating, comedy and narcissistic wonder and feeding. Matthew Rose's Les Affaires, a print based upon an enormous collage takes 'business as usual' to startling new heights and frighteningly new depths. "I live on a market street in Paris," says the artist. "This happens every day."

The Artist

Matthew Rose, an American artist based in Paris, spells with scissors.

His installations, massive 1000-piece wall-to-wall displays of individual collage works reinvent the process of reading. His exhibitions 'Spelling With Scissors' and 'God & Country' and 'A Kick in the Kunst' brought together the artist's immense visual and textural vocabulary in what several critics cited as a dadaist exploration of sense and nonsense. Surrealism moves into the 21st century with Rose's collages, text works, drawings, needlepoints and altered objects and books – works that are perhaps described as secrets wrapped in riddles that are visually baked and often French-fried.

Matthew's art is widely collected throughout the UK, Europe and the United States.

Vintage frames and pre-loved frames discovered in markets and charity shops can also provide unique and low-cost framing options. If a frame that you find is larger than the print fret not, a local framer would be able to cut a piece of mount that would allow the print to fit the frame perfectly.
